Getting Married at St George’s Church

Marrying in church is personal, meaningful and spiritual just as you want it to be.

Did you know you can marry in church whatever your beliefs, whether or not you are christened, and in many circumstances in a different parish church from your own?  It is even possible now to marry in church if you have been divorced.

Churches are special places and there are some things about a church wedding that you just can’t get anywhere else. Only in church can you say the vows which have stood the test of time and been said from one generation to the next. With the Vicar’s help you can blend ancient tradition and your own personal choices and style to create a celebration with true meaning and lasting impact.

For couples who live outside the parish you can marry at St George’s if either of you can show just one of the following seven connections with the parish.

That one of you:

  • was baptised in the parish or
  • was prepared for confirmation in the parish or
  • has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
  • has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months (many couples choose to attend church in the months leading up to their wedding and find it to be an enriching experience.)

That one of your parents, at any time after you were born:

  • has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or
  • has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or

That one of your parents or grandparents:

  • was married in the parish

When couples cannot qualify to be married in church there is still the option of a Blessing of Marriage following a civil ceremony.
